CIAO BECKHAM

Rampant United hit four past the mighty AC Milan to reach the final eight of the Champions League. David Beckham playing the prodigal son stole all the pre-match headlines for his long-awaited return to Old Trafford. Good to see the Stretford End gave him a fantastic welcome when he came on as a substitute late in the second half. Beckham booked his passage into United folklore after wearing the green and gold colours of Newton Heath scarf after the final whistle.

However, even Beckham couldn't stop United steam-rollering their way through to a superb 4-0 win. Rooney scored two taking his tally to 30 for the season. Park and Fletcher were also on the scoresheet. AC Milan were not that impressive, lacking in any desire to tackle back and looking a little old and tired. The only excitement came when they brought Beckham on and he let rip with a right foot volley. On this form, dare I say United are looking hard to beat. Things are looking up as Real Madrid got beaten by Lyon tonight and Ronaldo the winker is sent packing. Bring on the next round. Fingers crossed we get Arsenal and hope Chelsea get Barca. Would be nice to see John Terry get turned over by Messi....

CUPS, LEG BREAKS, AND THE IRISH

Good weekend of sport again but some aspects were all for the wrong reasons. I watched the Stoke v Arsenal match live and was feeling a little queasy after Aaron Ramsey's horrific injury. Arsene Wenger was positively apoplexic in the interview afterwards and made some unwise allegations that these injuries somehow always seem to happen to Arsenal players. The Chelsea v Man City was great viewing in the build up to whether Wayne Bridge would shake John Terry's hand before the match. Good old Wayne looked Terry square in the face and didn't shake his hand. Things hotted up in the match when Carlos Tevez got a little handbags at dawn with Terry and there was a coming together like two alpha male stags. Retribution for Bridge and pals when Chelsea capitulated, had two sent off and lost 4-2 at home. Man United and Arsenal fans rejoice - plenty of texts crossed last night between myself and Vic the Gooner laughing at Chelski's demise.

The not so good stuff saw England losing to Ireland in the Six Nations. Wales made a fighting comeback against France but couldn't quite win the game. And Italy beat Scotland!

Back to today's League Cup Final which saw Manchester United beat Villa 2-1 with Michael Owen getting Utd's first and Rooney scoring another header to win the match. World class Rooney is hitting some excellent form and let's hope he's injury free on the lead up to the world cup this summer.

It's 5pm on Saturday and Final Score has just confirmed the following 3 items of beautiful news... Man United have beaten Hull 4-0. Wayne Rooney bagged all four of them taking his tally to 20 this season. United return to the top of the Premiership. It doesn't get much better if you're a red and an England supporter and I'm going to indulge myself in this glory for a few moments.

Glory over and so to the not so tantalising news around Old Trafford. Figures were published this week on the current financial status at Man Utd. Following the Glazer takeover, huge loans were secured to gain control of the club.Debts totalling £716m were published this week, but cash reserves made slightly easier reading following the sale of Ronaldo for £80m. Rumours are circulating that Rooney may be the next to leave Old Trafford for Real Madrid. A stock value of anything between £50m-80m would certainly ease the investors coffers. Can you imagine Rooney at Real Madrid? He can barely speak English let alone Espanol. 'Calm down, calm down there lad. Dos beers por favor ay ay?' And next year Kai Wayne has a new baby brother.. San Miguel Poncho Rooney.

Amongst the financial turmoil, the United players continue to enjoy rich pickings. Get this... In 2008, salary costs of £121m were shared between 68 players and 476 ancillary staff. Despite the input from 476 ancillary staff, United have recently endured a crocked defence and seen defeats to two of their greatest rivals - losing 1-0 to Leeds and 2-1 to Man City. 476 ancillary staff? I'm just going to take a few moments to try and imagine what 476 ancillary staff actually do.

Perhaps I'll just smile in the knowledge that we're back on top... Rooney plays for us and for England... Ferdinand is back.... and I'm filling out an application form to become the 477th member of the ancillary staff. I'm sure they'll need a mental health nurse / blog writer in there somewhere...
